Whether you are following a certain diet, have dietary restrictions, or just choose not to drink, faux cocktails make toasts and celebrations inclusive for all the attendees. This enjoyable savory drink has good fats, vitamins A and E from the green olives, and a fantastic tart flavor, ideal as an aperitif.

Although there are many opinions about the benefits, or not, of drinking seltzer water, the bottom line is that one glass of a carbonated unsweetened beverage is absolutely more healthy than a can of soda. If you simply prefer not to drink seltzer or it just doesn't sit well with your gut, no worries. Simply use regular water; it will still taste great and you still get to eat olives! Or use naturally carbonated water instead to get a bit of bubbly with each sip.

Although evidently paleo, this mocktail is also vegan and vegetarian, it's great for people with wheat and dairy allergies, and it can be enjoyed by pretty much anyone who enjoys the flavor of olives.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup carbonated water (or sparkling mineral water)
  • 1 tablespoon olive juice (manzanilla)
  • 3 olives (manzanilla)

Steps to Make It

  1. Place the 1 cup of seltzer water and 1 tablespoon of manzanilla olive juice in a cocktail shaker and shake until well combined. If you don't have a cocktail shaker simply pour them into a cocktail glass and stir.

  2. Place three olives on a toothpick and place it in the cocktail glass with the seltzer mixture.

  3. Serve and enjoy!

Paleo Mocktail Ideas

Mixing mocktails for paleo followers can be easy and fun. Add fresh herbs and fresh fruit, and always use seltzer or soda water as your base. Here are a few ideas:

  • Pickled Onions: Use pickled onions instead of olives. But be sure the onion brine does not contain refined sugar.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: Add 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to 1 cup of cold soda water. Grate fresh ginger on top and garnish with 1 small apple slice.
  • Grapes and Basil: Crush 5 red seedless grapes and 4 basil leaves at the bottom of a tall glass. Add 4 ice cubes and 1 cup of seltzer water.
  • Mint and Blackberries: Crush 6 blackberries at the bottom of a tall glass. Add 1 cup of soda water, 4 ice cubes, and garnish with mint leaves.
  • Watermelon and Basil: Squeeze the juice out of 50 grams of seedless watermelon. Add 1 cup of soda water, 4 ice cubes, and garnish with fresh mint leaves.
  • Pomegranate and Lime: Mix 1 cup of cold seltzer with 2 tablespoons of pomegranate seeds. Add 4 ice cubes and the juice of 1/2 of a lime. Garnish with a lime wedge.
  • Lemon and Rosemary: Mix 1 cup of seltzer with the juice of 1 lime, add 4 ice cubes, and garnish with a sprig of rosemary.
  • Green Tea: Add 3 green tea bags or 3 teaspoons of loose green tea to 1 1/2 cups of boiling water. Let steep and completely cool without removing the bags. Take 1/2 cup of the cool tea and add 1/2 cup of seltzer, a squeeze of lime and 4 ice cubs into a tall glass.
